Scots English College PTE Academic Preparation Course is designed to prepare students who wish to sit the PTE Academic.

 

The Scots PTE Academic Preparation Course is a stand-alone course consisting of 24 weeks’ face-to-face study (excluding holidays). Students must possess adequate English skills to enter the course. It is recommended that students with a primary intention of taking the PTE Academic Preparation course but currently hold a lower English level than the CEFR=B1 entry requirement for the course, should take a General English course until they have attained at least Intermediate level.

 

Depending on the student’s desired PTE Academic test target, students may elect to complete the first 12 weeks of the course or the full 24 weeks of the PTEA Preparation course.

More about the PTE Academic test

 

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic examination is the fasted growing test in Australia. It is a computer-based test of English that students use to demonstrate their English level for both study overseas and for immigration. The PTEA is approved by the Australian Government for visa purposes and is also accepted by thousands of institutions in the Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland.

Some facts about the PTE Academic test: 

  • It tests Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking
  • The full test is done in a single session, lasting 3 hours
  • The test is taken sitting at a computer and headset in a secure test environment
  • The speaking part of the exam is also completed at the computer by recording the test-takers voice which is then sent for marking.
  • Test results are usually received within 5 days
  • There are tests 363 days of the year, at one of over 200 locations worldwide
  • Test takers complete between 70 and 91 test items
  • There are 20 different item types, e.g. reading aloud, repeat sentences, listening followed by filling in the blanks and multiple choice questions, select missing               words, highlight incorrect words, write from dictation
  • The PTE Academic has a score range of 10 to 90
  • Tests must be taken at approved PTE Academic test centres. There are test centres in Adelaide, Brisbane, The Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth & Sydney

The test owners, Pearson Education Ltd, suggest that, from their experience, that most universities require:

  • For undergraduate studies:          a minimum score between 51 and 61
  • For postgraduate studies:            a minimum score between 57 and 67
  • For MBA studies:                            a minimum score between 59 and 69

If you wish live in Australia, you will need to have good English skills. The Australian Department of Immigration & Border Protection (DIBP) uses different words to describe the different levels of English you need depending on the type of visa or the skills you have to work in Australia.

  • SUPERIOR ENGLISH (for points tested Skilled visas):  Achieve a PTE Academic test score of at least 79 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing)
  • PROFICIENT ENGLISH (for points tested Skilled Visas): Achieve a PTE Academic test score of at least 65 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing)
  • COMPETENT ENGLISH: Achieve a PTE Academic test score of at least 50 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing)
  • VOCATIONAL ENGLISH: Achieve a PTE Academic test score of at least 36 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing)
  • FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH Achieve a PTE Academic overall band score of at least 30 based on the four test components of speaking, reading, writing and listening.
