This course is designed to get students learning and using English right from the beginning, as well as introducing students to the culture of the English-speaking world. The course mainly focuses on giving students a practical understanding of the English language, gradually building on the student’s own source of vocabulary and grammar, and laying a fundamental platform for four major English skills comprising listening, speaking, reading, and writing.


By the end of the course students will:

  • Have a range of common vocabulary and expressions belonging to common topics, from daily communication and real-life situations to inter-culture
  • Make his/her meaning clear in basic, routine situations through a range of grammar and limited vocabulary 
  • Gain the ability and confidence to communicate in English when dealing with familiar topics and themes
  • Write basic sentences with sufficient accuracy to be readily intelligible.

To begin studying at Scots English College, you need to:

  • Be 18 years old or older
  • Complete a placement test to assess your current level of language proficiency provide previous evidence of English proficiency, for example, a certificate from another ELICOS provider, an IELTS, TOEIC or TOEFL certificate (or equivalent)

Please be aware that the English language skills level required by Scots English College may be different from the level of skills required for your student visa application. Your progress through the levels is based on your performance.
