This course is designed to help students from the Pre-Intermediate level improve their English language ability in four important skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing to a good level of basic English to prepare them for advanced training. Through a series of intensive and practical exercises, this course should equip students with the basic skills in English listening comprehension, reading and writing. The students will also understand how to use these skills and systems in their academic study.


By the end of the course students will be able to:

  • Use intermediate-level vocabulary and expressions belonging to common topics.
  • Obtain a fundamental knowledge of the systems in English pronunciation and English grammar
  • Be confident presenting specific topics in class
  • Follow simple relationships between ideas in talks and discussions, such as cause-effect, problem-solution and reason-result.

To begin studying at Scots English College, you need to:

  • Be 18 years old or older
  • Complete a placement test to assess your current level of language proficiency or provide previous evidence of English proficiency, for example, a certificate from another ELICOS provider, an IELTS, TOEIC or TOEFL certificate (or equivalent)

Please be aware that the English language skills level required by Scots English College may be different from the level of skills required for your student visa application. Your progress through the levels is based on your performance.
