So, you are in a new City and you have started to settle in… Now it’s time to explore and get to know your surroundings a little better, become familiar and understand the culture that surrounds you.
At ALC we know how important it can be to have a little help with finding your way around, so we have created this post to share with you some of the amazing spots to visit to start your adventure. We give you a list of the top tourist attractions and where they are.
Circular Quay
With an array of Buskers performing along the promenade, the atmosphere is vibrant and upbeat. Cafes and restaurants along the way, there is plenty to eat and drink with more than enough to see, and not forgetting to jump on Sydney Ferry (A fantastic way to see the Harbour it all its glory) You will love it.
The Opera House
Get your camera out for this one, it is most definitely a sight to be seen and remembered, take a look inside the box office will be able to give you all the information about any of the upcoming shows (this is a must) the experience is breathtaking! While waiting to can walk around the corner to the Opera bar and have a quick bite to eat and a light refreshment.
Royal Botanical Gardens
2016 saw this beauty celebrate its 200th Birthday. Established in 1816 featuring plantings from all over the world. This Icon was established by Governor Macquarie as a Scientific Research Institution. Head botanist Charles Fraser was appointed to research plant species and acclimatise introduced plants to the new land. There are free guided tours available or you can simply have a picnic and enjoy the view, tourists and the locals can often be seen riding bikes, reading a book or exercising.
The Historic Rocks Area of Sydney
Originally slums in the early colony days of 1788, featuring rowdy pubs and poor living conditions for ex-convicts, wharf men and residents. These days with its proximity to the Harbour and Sydney’s most significant historic areas, the beautiful sandstone streets have been restored to a beautiful historic tourist precinct. The Rocks also plays host to a weekend Market on Argyle street, consisting of over 100 stalls surrounded by permanent shop fronts housing a mix of souvenirs shops, cafes, galleries and restaurants.
Sydney Harbour Bridge
With quite a few stairs to climb (but the view most definitely worth the exercise) to get to the pedestrian walk way which can actually be accessed from each side of this historic landmark. An absolute must for visitors rewarded with the most inspiring views of the city the Harbour, Luna Park, and the Opera house just to name a few. The walk is an easy flat walk about a kilometre and shouldn’t take much more than 20 minutes. Be sure to stop along the way and take some pictures. Once you get to the other side roll on into Luna Park for a little fun before heading back to the other side (Via Ferry or Train).
Luna Park
Known to many as the happiest face in Sydney, you will be welcomed by a big friendly smile that has seen countless visitors over the years, enjoy the rides the cotton candy and the views before you head back with your memories of the Fun Park.
Manly Corso
A ferry across to Manly will see a day or afternoon of bliss! 30 minutes of breathtaking views with the wind in your hair… The ferry will dock at the far end of the Manly Corso and short walk down to the beach with the opportunity for a quick swim, plentiful dining experiences… there is something for everyone and every budget, sit for a while to catch some photos of the amazing sunset before heading back.
Taronga Zoo
If its Giraffes, monkey’s elephants or emus you are looking to see, this is your one stop shop! At Taronga zoo, you can see it all. Just 12 minutes from the city by ferry, and did I mention more breathtaking views of the city and its Harbour, with free shows and talks throughout the day, this is a must see.
Darling Harbour
A very picturesque attraction popular with tourist and a wonderful place for recreation and shopping. Redeveloped in the 1980s Darling Harbour is a great spot to have a bite, have some well-deserved retail therapy whilst taking in the amazing harbour views.
Queen Victoria Building
Th Queen Victoria Building (QVB) is an amazing old building with so much charm and character, it takes up an entire city block. Built around 1893 to house the City marketplace, the building fell into disrepair once the Markets were moved and was restored to its current state in 1984. Bosting 4 shopping floors it also features an amazing dome to flood the building with natural light. There is something for every budget and taste in the QVB.
Centrepoint Tower
Just a short walk from the QVB Centrepoint tower is another must see in Sydney, the tallest building in Sydney. Built 30 years ago and measuring 309 metres high a very distinctive shape and experience… If you get lost trying to find this iconic attraction just look up! You won’t miss it. Four main levels open to the General public with the option to shop and dine with a 360-degree view of the city… No better place to have a meal (fine dining, or a more relaxed atmosphere) both available.
Bondi Beach
Bondi Beach is one of Sydney’s most Iconic beaches with its white sand and waves, if you are looking to catch a wave or some rays grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants or cafes or just to sit and watch the world go by, you won’t be disappointed with this beauty… Relax and enjoy this part of the journey, and don’t forget a hat, sunscreen and your best smile you never know you may get snapped whilst Bondi Rescue is being filmed!
